Also in action today were Chelsea, who hosted Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. City have a good recent record against the Blues, winning the last three meetings, with their talisman Carlos Tevez finding the net in all three games. The Argentine scored twice in this fixture last season, when City came from behind to win 4-2 in a lively encounter, which Chelsea ended with nine men after both Juliano Belletti and Michael Ballack were sent off.

The last time Blackpool faced Fulham at Craven Cottage, these sides were both in the third tier. That 1999 match ended 4-0 in Fulham's favour - a similar result this time would put a huge dent in the Ian Holloway's bid to keep Blackpool in the Premier League for a second season.

Champions Chelsea won this corresponding fixture at Stamford Bridge 7-1 last season, but Villa tightened up their defence to earn a goalless draw with the Blues at Villa Park back in October. The goals have dried up for Carlo Ancelotti's side after their blistering beginning to the season, but they will be desperate to get the New Year off to a good start as they bid to retain their Premier League title. The day's other game sees Wigan host Newcastle. The Geordies have a dismal record in away matches with the Latics and have lost all four of their Premier League matches at the DW Stadium.
