Madrid will start as favourites, with their glittering squad that includes the world's most expensive footballer, French midfield maestro Zinedine Zidane. But Liverpool showed last season, when beating Bayern Munich, that the Uefa Cup winners are not necessarily the poor relations in this fixture.

In today's other matches involving British teams, Wales faced a tough test at the Millennium Stadium as they looked for a win against Italy, the Euro 2000 runners-up, while in Group Six Northern Ireland look for a first-time win over the Ukraine at Windsor Park.
