Bobby Charlton will present the Watney Cup. He was on the losing side in this competition on two occasions - first against Derby County (1970) and then against Halifax Town (1971).

The eight clubs invited to join the Watney Cup competition are: West Ham, Stoke City, Hull City, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth, Mansfield and Peterborough.
