Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy is rushed to hospital with her baby's life hanging in the balance. With news of the baby's tragic death, Sheelagh struggles with the loss especially when her house is turned into a crime scene. Turning to PC Reg Hollis she voices her fears that Des Taviner may have been involved in the baby's death. Meanwhile PC Cameron Tait turns to drink in an effort to escape his feelings of guilt and responsibility. Having picked a fight in a pub, he turns to the bottle again and finds a sympathetic PC Kerry Young to help him home. Will Kerry fall for his drunken attentions? PC Tony Stamp and PC Honey Harman arrest an ex criminal, George Dooley, (Alan Ford, from Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) for assaulting his prospective son-in-law, Steve. George doesn't want Steve marrying his daughter because he seems to be embroiled in a replica gun racket. Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy is shaken by the previous night's sighting of Des Taviner. Confused about why Des should come back to Sun Hill, Sheelagh becomes frantic when she believes her baby Niamh has gone missing and Reg attempts to calm her. When the baby is discovered safe and well Sheelagh refuses to take any chances and asks PC Cameron Tait to babysit. Thinking her baby is in safe hands, Sheelagh returns home to find Cameron and a paramedic desperately trying to save her baby's life. Elsewhere, PC Yvonne Hemmingway deals with an hysterical woman who is smashing up a shop. Discovering that she is a rape victim who is being traumatised and stalked by her attacker, DC Terry Perkins and DC Eva Sharpe step in to try to convince another of the rapist's victims to come forward and press charges after years of keeping quiet. And Superintendent Adam Okaro is forced to put his recent domestic troubles behind him and begins to build bridges with both the relief and his wife.

When DS Debbie McAllister has trouble with her babysitter, she is forced to bring Andrew into the station. While McAllister is indisposed, DC Eva Sharpe is assigned to what looks like a straightforward case of bigamy when two men are arrested fighting in the local library. After witnessing a fight in custody, the suspect Leonard Noakes, admits to murdering a man many years previously, but Sharpe finds Noakes' supposed victim alive and not-so-well in St Hughs Hospital. As the case gets more intriguing, Sharpe finds herself under scrutiny from her boss, DI Neil Manson who orders her to leave the case to MIT. When Ross requests her help, Sharpe can't help but close up the loose ends, but a furious Manson warns her ""her card is marked"". After their night of passion, PC Kerry Young finds PC Cameron Tait is acting coldly towards her. Could it be that Cameron is carrying heavy guilt over baby Niamh Murphy's death, or is it because Sgt. Supt Okaro faces a difficult time with the fraud investigations into his wife's bank accounts and her relationship with the Reverend Andho. How will Okaro deal with the subsequent and growing press interest and the certain scandal, especially when Denise admits her feelings for the Reverend? Sgt. Sheelagh Murphy reports to Insp. Gina Gold and DCI Jack Meadows that she was visited by Des Taviner the night before. Having learned of baby Niamh's death, Taviner finds PC Reg Hollis alone guarding her chapel of rest. When Hollis tries to radio Sun Hill, Des overpowers him and handcuffs him, and Hollis lets slip that PC Cameron Tait was babysitting Niamh when she died. Back at the station, Hollis admits to Insp. Gold that he knew Des started the Sun Hill fire, and he fears for his career as he is questioned by MIT. Following a tip-off from DC Terry Perkins' snout, DI Neil Manson goes undercover as a hitman when a woman wants her husband killed. As DS Ramani De Costa investigates the domestic violence aspect of the case, the husband's involvement in an actual murder is revealed. DI Manson is delighted with the result, but DS De Costa is upset when Manson usurps her CSU authority. Marie Carver is in court on charges of domestic violence against her husband, PC Jim Carver. Despite testimony from PC Gabriel Kent, who witnessed one of Marie's attacks on Jim, Marie and her lawyer manage to turn the case around and plead self-defence, saying that Jim had attacked Marie first. Marie's son, Ben Graham, takes the stand, and his emotional testimony absolves Jim of any violent actions - Marie changes her plea to guilty, and Jim finds himself tempted to drink again. Supt. Adam Okaro is worried that his job is on the line - the new Borough Commander, Louise Campbell, is on her way to see him, and he blames himself for the Cathy Bradford incident as he had neglected to cancel her keypass to the station, allowing her access to the boiler room. PC Tony Stamp and PC Kerry Young bring in two teenagers, Curtis and Carla, on suspicion of mugging, but when Curtis admits stealing money from Carla's father, Rev. Andho, further investigation reveals that the Reverend has been skimming

A covert operation is planned to trap Des at Niamh's funeral despite Sergeant June Ackland's promise to Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy that this will not happen. Sheelagh is upset when she discovers the deception, and the last straw is when PC Kerry Young lets slip that she knows Des is the father. Sheelagh dramatically announces to the guests that Des is the father while her humiliated husband stands by. She decides to run away with Des, but at the last minute Sheelagh informs Superintendent Adam Okaro. Will Sheelagh's defection finally capture Des? PC Reg Hollis fears that his career is on the line when Inspector Gina Gold discovers that he knew about Des Taviner starting the fire. PC Cameron Tait and Kerry uncover a shoplifting scandal, and Cameron refuses the offer of a safe house following Des's threat on his life. TSG storm the boiler room and Supt. Adam Okaro arrests a screaming Cathy Bradford for murder. Despite his colleagues' warnings, DC Brandon Kane insists on returning to work at CID, but when he finds himself conned by an elderly woman for an insurance scam, he realises his mind isn't on the job any more. Kane goes to see Supt. Okaro and hands in his resignation, saying he wants to spend time with his kids. PC Gary Best is seconded to CID, and is temporarily partnered with DC Terry Perkins who barely tolerates his new sidekick. The pair investigate the mugging of a city trader by two homeless ex-servicemen. Terry is disgusted by the world the traders inhabit and is frustrated when he learns that the mugging was a revenge attack. When Gary goes out on his own initiative and almost blows the case, Terry takes matters into his own hands and threatens to reveal the trader's cocaine use. Sheelagh has left her mobile on and connected to DCI Jack Meadows to give them a lead on their whereabouts. But Taviner soon realises that Sheelagh is double crossing him and during a dramatic road chase drives the car straight into a tunnel. With the full force of Sun Hill in pursuit and the road ahead closed, it seems as if Taviner's days on the run are numbered. But when police hear two gun shots ring out, they realise just how crazed Taviner is. With the discovery of Gabriel Kent's birth certificate and the knowledge that June Ackland is his mother, Jim Carver is the one to spill the incest beans and June is faced with the shocking revelation that she has been sleeping with her own son. Sgt. June Ackland has discovered PC Cathy Bradford has barricaded herself and DC Brandon Kane's kids in the station's boiler room. When Cathy promises to release the kids in exchange for Brandon as a hostage, Insp. Gina Gold refuses, but Supt. Adam Okaro overrides her decision. Cathy insists Brandon must choose one child, but he manages to negotiate Zoe's release as well. Forcing Brandon to handcuff himself, Bradford relives the events of the past year, including the death of Brandon's wife Tanya. The station is evacuated, and the TSG arrive to provide support. Cathy's stories become increasingly unbelievable, as she tells Brandon that she was abducted by a serial killer as a child. DS Samanatha Nixon and DC Eva Sharpe trawl through Cathy's belongings and find that was not true. When Cathy moves Brandon out of range of the TSG probe, Okaro authorises TSG to force entry into the room. Brandon manages to overpower Cathy, but she lights a petrol fire intending to kill them both.

Sergeant June Ackland confronts PC Gabriel Kent over the shocking discovery that he is her son. With her world in turmoil, she is horrified to hear him confirm that he is her son. But there's an even more sinister twist to the story when she breaks down, confiding in him that she was raped and her child is the outcome of that attack. Gabriel has a sudden change of heart and June is set to face the real truth behind his warped mind. Will Gabriel's revelation be too much for June? PC Cameron Tait is still being held hostage by Des Taviner. Though a crazed man, Des is beginning to calm and realises killing Tait isn't the answer and leaves Cameron unharmed. Having made contact with Sheelagh Murphy and letting her know where Cameron is, Des' violent chase comes to an end and Sheelagh is left convinced this is the last they'll see of him. PC Kerry Young finds time to comfort PC Cameron Tait in the shower after his ordeal.

Leo Price agrees to help Sgt. Dale Smith and CID with some information when his little brother is attacked and left injured. When the information leads to several arrests on the estate, Smithy must take steps to protect Leo from a possible revenge attack. PC Cathy Bradford, still in the boiler room with the Kane kids, turns off the station heating to lure someone down there. An engineer is called to fix the boiler, but he is knocked unconscious by Cathy. When Sgt. June Ackland and PC Honey Harman go looking for the missing engineer, they find him outside the boiler room, they realise what's going on. Ackland tries her best to coax the rogue copper out, but Bradford refuses to talk to anyone except DC Brandon Kane.

PC Gabriel Kent fears exposure and confronts Sergeant June Ackland who tells him that she will keep his identity secret if he gets her the address of her son. The difficulty of her situation is heightened by the fact that she deals with the case of a missing child. Elsewhere Gabriel confronts PC Jim Carver for telling June that he is her son and the two come to blows. Sergeant Dale Smith breaks them up and both Smithy and Jim agree to keep his secret quiet for June's sake. But with Gabriel's popularity seriously on the wane, how long can he hope to rely on them? PC Kerry Young confides in PC Yvonne Hemmingway about her night of passion with PC Cameron Tait the night before. It could be the start of something special but Smithy is not happy and it looks like he might stand in their way... DC Eva Sharpe and DI Neil Manson work on the case of a missing girl and discover that it is the girl's abusive grandfather that has taken her away. Meanwhile Polly Page returns to Sun Hill
