Overview
Sergeant June Ackland confronts PC Gabriel Kent over the shocking discovery that he is her son. With her world in turmoil, she is horrified to hear him confirm that he is her son. But there's an even more sinister twist to the story when she breaks down, confiding in him that she was raped and her child is the outcome of that attack. Gabriel has a sudden change of heart and June is set to face the real truth behind his warped mind. Will Gabriel's revelation be too much for June? PC Cameron Tait is still being held hostage by Des Taviner. Though a crazed man, Des is beginning to calm and realises killing Tait isn't the answer and leaves Cameron unharmed. Having made contact with Sheelagh Murphy and letting her know where Cameron is, Des' violent chase comes to an end and Sheelagh is left convinced this is the last they'll see of him. PC Kerry Young finds time to comfort PC Cameron Tait in the shower after his ordeal.

Sergeant Dale Smith breaks them up and both Smithy and Jim agree to keep his secret quiet for June's sake. But with Gabriel's popularity seriously on the wane, how long can he hope to rely on them? PC Kerry Young confides in PC Yvonne Hemmingway about her night of passion with PC Cameron Tait the night before. A covert operation is planned to trap Des at Niamh's funeral despite Sergeant June Ackland's promise to Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy that this will not happen. Sheelagh is upset when she discovers the deception, and the last straw is when PC Kerry Young lets slip that she knows Des is the father. Sgt. June Ackland threatens to expose PC Gabriel Kent's true identity, but Kent insists he loves her and his job. Ackland agrees to a compromise, she will keep quiet about Kent's assumed identity if he gives her the address of the real Gabriel Kent: her son, Robert Ackland. Kent refuses, but eventually relents when he realises June is serious. Posing as a housebuyer, ""June Carver"", an emotional June Ackland visits her long-lost son and meets her grand-daughter, but she is too afraid to tell him her real identity. DS Samantha Nixon grudgingly works with DI Neil Manson to locate dangerous escaped convict Eric Taylor, who has already eluded police twice. When Taylor is spotted, PC Jim Carver pursues him into a swimming pool complex, and the two end up in the water. Sgt. Sheelagh Murphy reports to Insp. Gina Gold and DCI Jack Meadows that she was visited by Des Taviner the night before. Having learned of baby Niamh's death, Taviner finds PC Reg Hollis alone guarding her chapel of rest. When Hollis tries to radio Sun Hill, Des overpowers him and handcuffs him, and Hollis lets slip that PC Cameron Tait was babysitting Niamh when she died. Back at the station, Hollis admits to Insp. Gold that he knew Des started the Sun Hill fire, and he fears for his career as he is questioned by MIT. Following a tip-off from DC Terry Perkins' snout, DI Neil Manson goes undercover as a hitman when a woman wants her husband killed. As DS Ramani De Costa investigates the domestic violence aspect of the case, the husband's involvement in an actual murder is revealed. DI Manson is delighted with the result, but DS De Costa is upset when Manson usurps her CSU authority. DCI Jack Meadow's former lover and ex-prostitute Rachel Heath (Lysette Anthony) is due in court to stand trial for assault. With the news that she's pregnant with his child, she tells Jack she intends to tell the court about their affair and go for a mistrial. With his police career on the line, Jack suddenly makes a surprise proposal but will former Sun Hill officer Mickey Webb be able to convince Jack he's doing the wrong thing? The pressure's mounting for DI Neil Manson when DC Eva Sharpe implies she knows about his father in law using rent boys. Neil learns of Jack's affair with Rachel which gives him the bargaining tool to get Eva off his back. Is this the end of Eva's time at Sun Hill? Elsewhere, DS Debbie McAllister investigates an attack on two boys but was the attack a racist or homophobic assault?

When DS Debbie McAllister has trouble with her babysitter, she is forced to bring Andrew into the station. While McAllister is indisposed, DC Eva Sharpe is assigned to what looks like a straightforward case of bigamy when two men are arrested fighting in the local library. After witnessing a fight in custody, the suspect Leonard Noakes, admits to murdering a man many years previously, but Sharpe finds Noakes' supposed victim alive and not-so-well in St Hughs Hospital. As the case gets more intriguing, Sharpe finds herself under scrutiny from her boss, DI Neil Manson who orders her to leave the case to MIT. When Ross requests her help, Sharpe can't help but close up the loose ends, but a furious Manson warns her ""her card is marked"". After their night of passion, PC Kerry Young finds PC Cameron Tait is acting coldly towards her. Could it be that Cameron is carrying heavy guilt over baby Niamh Murphy's death, or is it because Sgt. PC Andrea Dunbar arrives in the force and her keenness seems to good to be true, but little do the relief know that they have an undercover reporter among them. When Eva discovers that Debbie told Neil about Jacks affair she is furious and they fight. Tensions run high between DCI Jack Meadows and DI Neil Manson because Neil wants Eva out, no matter what and just as he is announcing her departure, Jack comes in with an offer for Eva to join MIT. Polly returns to Sun Hill as the new CAD operator but after she is snubbed by Neil during her shift she feels vulnerable and things get worse when she returns home to find the word 'murderer' painted across her flat window.

Sergeant Sheelagh Murphy is rushed to hospital with her baby's life hanging in the balance. With news of the baby's tragic death, Sheelagh struggles with the loss especially when her house is turned into a crime scene. Turning to PC Reg Hollis she voices her fears that Des Taviner may have been involved in the baby's death. Meanwhile PC Cameron Tait turns to drink in an effort to escape his feelings of guilt and responsibility. Having picked a fight in a pub, he turns to the bottle again and finds a sympathetic PC Kerry Young to help him home. Will Kerry fall for his drunken attentions? PC Nick Klein and PC Yvonne Hemingway attend a disturbance at a funeral home and discover an unusual case: the body and casket of the mother of the Coombes brothers has disappeared - including £350,000. Turning the case over to DS Debbie McAllister and DC Ken Drummond in CID, the officers investigate all the involved parties including the brother, the funeral director and the security guard. Against her better judgement and PC Tony Stamp's warnings, Polly Page befriends journalist Frank Fisher who helps her out when she cops abuse and vandalism from local youths. PC Reg Hollis and Sgt. Dale Smith check out the local Lido swimming pool when the manager reports a break-in. Finding nothing, they return to the station, but when Reg heads back on his own, he is confronted by Des Taviner who wants to tie up the loose ends between them before he disappears for good. Confused about why Des should come back to Sun Hill, Sheelagh becomes frantic when she believes her baby Niamh has gone missing and Reg attempts to calm her. When the baby is discovered safe and well Sheelagh refuses to take any chances and asks PC Cameron Tait to babysit. Thinking her baby is in safe hands, Sheelagh returns home to find Cameron and a paramedic desperately trying to save her baby's life. Elsewhere, PC Yvonne Hemmingway deals with an hysterical woman who is smashing up a shop. Discovering that she is a rape victim who is being traumatised and stalked by her attacker, DC Terry Perkins and DC Eva Sharpe step in to try to convince another of the rapist's victims to come forward and press charges after years of keeping quiet. And Superintendent Adam Okaro is forced to put his recent domestic troubles behind him and begins to build bridges with both the relief and his wife.

Paramedics fail to revive Des Taviner, and MIT's DI Madden who has arrived to question Des about the Sun Hill bombing finds himself investigating the suspect's murder instead. Sgt. Sheelagh Murphy comes under particular scrutiny from MIT, given her history with Des, and her decision to place a mentally unstable prisoner in the same cell. Tensions between Sgts Murphy and June Ackland reach an all-time high when June is unable to confirm Sheelagh's innocence. Supt. Adam Okaro is determined to nail big-time criminal Bob Coles, suspected of people smuggling, and DI Neil Manson dangles the carrot of a free trip to Paris for the officer who arrests Coles.
